Newest release defaults to 1.2 as long as you use an openssl that supports it (note that this is not the case on some older distros but should be on at least buster). That was not the case in previous releases… You can check release notes to confirm version but I think that change was in 1.10.0. The commit note and release notes will have more details on this.
