[Freeswitch-users] Variables in a user directory config will not a channel variable

is it specific to this variable or is it any variable you set in the
directory?
are you sure it uses the auth of freeswitch or is there a proxy betwwen the
user and freeswitch that handles the auth?
you can try the info application or uuid_dump to see if there is anything
obvious
