Pulseaudio would certainly help in getting an audio level monitor
fast, there are already example code[1] and pavumeter available to do
that quite fast.

About the mod_pulseaudio module, I'd just like to say that we are
using it quite extensively for a softphone on FreeSwitch
1.4.15~1-1~wheezy+1. I compiled the module externally and have it
loaded on startup, when a new call is answered, a new PulseAudio
channel is created.

I also have PulseAudio bindings for Python available however, it isn't
properly licensed yet for open source distribution, if you are
interested, I might look into getting it on GitHub.
