There are fewer changes to deal with if you go to latest 1.2 but you should be making the full transition to 1.4 as it is the new standard release.

It actually wasn't a DB issue, It was a race condition, Its been fixed.  Use Master.

That sounds more to me a db problem,  I usually see this with mysql. It requires tunning.
You may try also to load memcache to offload commong queries.
