Few other considerations:
When the company doesn't exist anymore, who is gonna program the app?
When the company is still there, the app is forcing you to update to some new iOwn or Android device. "Sorry your device isn't supported by the newer software. You need at least iOS X to install this app."
Not to mention that I'm really interested in the security design behind it...
There is another device out there, which has the same limiting (only) app function: http://www.myskybell.com/
Believe me, I really appreciate new products with good design, but *please*, give me a device which is compatible with good open standards so I own the device myself; now and in the future.
==Suggestion==
Button is pressed:
- Phone/Computer is connected with VPN to my home.
- Doorbell is client to the voip server.
- The event also pushes an XMPP message.
- Cam is a sip video client or at least, it streams to my internal
(web)server.
So then I can use any sip client to be future proof. The security is granted with VPN. Maybe the doorbell can also support other home automations standards, so it can be part of a whole system?
Camera's running with www.zoneminder.com, fhem or something else for triggering the lights, etc..
I'm afraid those companies mainly care about there shareholders value, not about the interest of the customer. Bringing out a device that is user friendly doesn't need to exclude the open standards for the people who prefer there own methods of getting things done.
My 2ct.
