you can fire a "NOTIFY" event with the proper headers which will cause 
freeswitch to send the update. there is a lua example on the wiki at 
http://wiki.freeswitch.org/wiki/FreeSwitch_MetaSwitch_HowTo#MetaSwitch.2FFreeSwitch_Message_Waiting_Indicator.
