It's just as easy on windows, most VPN protocols are there out of the box.

If you are not using ESL on the server itself I would suggest using ssl or ssh tunneling to handle it, or even a vpn connection would work as well. If you are running on linux servers, ssl tunneling and ssh tunneling are relatively easy to setup. Windows, don't know.
