Did the announcement also say they were getting rid of the conf directory
and not bothering to updated directory settings in the default conf files
(that are now in the root directory).  Do they plan to update all the
freeswitch documentation now as well which talks about the conf directory
all over the place?

 

How long ago was this announcement made?  The issue is not about being
caught off guard btw.  It's about why and how it's being done.

There was indeed an announcement by SwK himself. It was as close to FNLoIP
(Flashing Neon Lights over IP) as you can get.
