No doubt it is a hackish solution.  But in the GridFS case, the
filesystem semantics are a bit different.  File truncation to a >0 size,
for example, is an extremely expensive operation.  The mod_voicemail
makes a fairly extensive use of such operation.

Sounds like a lot of work.
