Follow the rules of thumb. Choose the platform (software/hardware) as close

For me, an inexpensive Seagate DockStar (Marvell chipset clocked @1.2GHz,
128MB RAM, several USB2 ports, consumes only 3Watts of electricity) runs a
self-built OpenWRT Linux flavor + an FS v1.0.6 suffices to my personal need,
YMMV.
