As for Basic you will be surpriced by the number of non-developers who can manage a few lines of BASIC and little else. It is an excellent idea.
 
Another surprice is the number of computers running BASIC around you. Your kids have toys with computers, your waching machine has a computer - and embedded BASIC has existed for around 35 years - Look at commercial support packages for MCU's and you will often find BASIC compilers for sale.
